Problems with the Priesthood

As I reported on November 17, 2004: When I was a young boy in the 1960's I spent a lot of time alone with numerous Catholic Priests in the back room of the sanctuary along with the bottles of sacramental wine.

I was never harmed.

I know you God-haters love to see it when a priest is brought down, and by extension the parish, diocese, denomination and Christianity as a whole. I know that you love to say things like "See? This is what Christians are really all about: harming kids, taking everyone's fun away, and turning society into a puritanical nightmare for anyone who wants to have a little fun".

But the truth is that there are certain anarchistic elements in the world that just hate the notion that anyone is smarter, more powerful, and in charge of life and the world. And rather than trying to make the argument that they hate God, even the notion that there might be a God, they resort to this kind of pettiness - as though God might be brought down because He associates with a pedophile priest.

For these, it's not about priests. It's not about kids. It's about hating God the creator, God the Father; the God of justice and vengeance, love and mercy. They want to destroy the faith that exists in the world one Christian at a time. If you want proof that it's an irrational hatred, then try to talk about it with them.

Am I standing up for pedophile priests? No. Try them and if they are found guilty then kick them out, let them face justice. You can't violate kids without consequences. But don't for a minute assume that its not happening in protestant churches, YMCA's, Youth Basketball Leagues, and everywhere else that kids gather.

Bottom line: The God of this Earth would demand that anyone who harmed a child be punished severely. No real Christian could possibly think otherwise. If you think that a priest should be punished more severely than say a grade school counselor for the same actions, then your problem is not with abusers, it's with priests.
